Cia Sargantana Company (Girona, Spain)
Diogenes Garten is a live immersive Virtual Reality (VR) performance that explores the concept of Europe through myths and texts shaping its identity.
It is the final chapter of a trilogy dedicated to migration and the myth of the “promised land.”
This is the first-ever VR live performance production made in Catalonia featuring live actors.
Using an accessible and artistic language, the performance invites audiences to critically reflect on the past in order to imagine the future of Europe.
Spectators, equipped with VR headsets, become active participants in the story, guided by performers in both physical and digital spaces.
The narrative follows the character of Diogenes on a journey through symbolic worlds.
Diogenes finds himself in a mysterious garden, disoriented and without memory.
All he remembers is a prophecy.
Through his journey in this virtual garden—constructed from fragments of his lost memories—he attempts to recover his identity, aided by the audience.
This personal journey mirrors the history of Europe itself, represented through the protagonist’s landscape of memory.
The audience plays an active role in this quest for truth.
Participants travel through seven themed environments, rich in visual and interactive stimuli: from the “garden of origins” to the “tree of European roots,” each stage invites reflection.
Themes explored include power, culture, media, consumerism, historical memory, and progress.
Literary and symbolic references (such as Hamlet) enrich the narrative.
The audience is not passive—their choices influence the story’s development.
Diogenes Garten offers a unique opportunity to experience Europe through art and technology.
An engaging and educational journey provides an innovative perspective on the challenges of contemporary European identity.
The performance is followed by a debate encouraging discussion on key European themes.
