Gender Theatre & Video Mapping Performance

By Compagnia L’Aquilone di Viviana

The Performance

“Nails & Crisis” is a theatrical performance based on an original script by Ilaria Nina Zedda, winner of the first prize at the competition “Women and Work, Women at Work” (2009), promoted by the Province of Cagliari and the cultural association L’Eccezione.

It stems from in-depth field research in the Cagliari suburbs, in the homes of young nail technicians working informally, and in local beauty salons.
The protagonist, Sonia, is a young single mother who, out of necessity, becomes a self-taught home beautician.
In her small “illegal salon”, she welcomes a diverse and loyal clientele. Amidst gossip, nail polish, and files, stories and confessions emerge, popular sayings are exchanged, and raw reflections are shared on the challenges of everyday life — especially regarding precarious and invisible female labor.

One of her regular clients is the Lawyer, whose presence brings a surprising twist to the story.

Through an ironic, direct, and at times bittersweet language, the play tackles the theme of gender inequality in the workplace, offering a sharp, empathetic, and authentic look at the obstacles many women face — navigating economic marginalization and daily resilience.

A key innovation in the staging is the use of video mapping, which transforms the domestic salon into a dreamlike, ever-shifting space.
The projections not only enhance the scenic design, but also serve as a visual dramaturgy, reflecting the inner emotions of the protagonist, the hidden desires, and emotional tensions of her clients.
Video mapping creates a poetic dialogue between reality and imagination.

A performance that merges spoken theatre, visual technology, and social inquiry, presenting a vivid and current portrait of women’s working conditions and the persistent gender gap.
