“Il Salto” (The Leap) is a theatrical performance freely inspired by Smith & Wesson by Alessandro Baricco. It tells the story of four eccentric, solitary characters—a fisherman, a charlatan, a young journalist, and an innkeeper—who meet at the foot of Niagara Falls. Nature, majestic and untamable, governs their lives and eventually becomes a chance for redemption: the dream of leaping into the void becomes a metaphor for rebirth, courage, and the desire to take control of one’s own life. The “great leap” is not portrayed as an act of death, but as an act of life: a symbolic dive into freedom, drawing inspiration from Native myths—such as that of Lelawala, the young woman who threw herself into the falls to calm the river spirits. The result is a poetic and ironic reflection on the human condition, the desire to escape inertia, and the longing to rediscover a deeper sense of existence.

Video Mapping as Dramaturgy

A central element of the staging is video mapping, which transforms the theatrical space into a dynamic visual landscape. The projections recreate the force and presence of Niagara Falls, oscillating between realistic and dreamlike settings.

Video mapping is not just a background—it acts as a dramaturgical language: it amplifies the characters’ emotions, accompanies their internal leaps, and makes the invisible visible—the border between life and death, dream and reality.
